Dr. Bruce S. Cohen received his Doctorate of Philosophy from the Kinesiology
Department located within the College of Education at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. His main area of interest lies in healthy behavior
change, specifically the adoption
and adherence of exercise and physical activity. In addition, Dr. Cohen has obtained a Masters degree in Clinical Exercise
Physiology from Northeastern University and a Bachelors degree from
Rutgers College in pre-physical therapy and psychology.
Dr. Bruce is certified as a Health/Fitness Instructor by the American College
of Sports Medicine (the leading authority on exercise). He is also certified by
the National Strength & Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength
& Conditioning Specialist. In addition Dr. Bruce teaches the Personal
Trainer and Advanced Personal Trainer certification courses for the
Aerobics & Fitness Association of America and Fitness Resource
Associates. Dr. Cohen serves as a committee member on the Joints
in Motion and Hero of the Year boards with the Arthritis
Foundation.
Dr. Cohen has 20 years experience as a wellness/fitness consultant/coach/trainer
with the U.S. Public
Health Service/Division of Federal Occupational Health, Temple University,
Continuum HealthCare, AreUFit Health Services, CIGNA HealthCare, Independent
Blue Cross, 1 to 1 Personal Training and Evolution Sports Science. During this time he has assessed,
designed, and implemented health promotion, corporate wellness, personal fitness
training, sports specific conditioning, and
occupational health services. As a member of the U.S. Public Health
Service National Task Force on Wellness Dr. Cohen co-developed the standards and
criteria that brought corporate wellness/fitness to the Federal Occupational
Health arena. More recently his work at Evolution Sports Science utilized
comprehensive (fitness, nutrition, physiology and psychology) assessment to
develop individualized programs.
EXCUSERCISE's health behavior change philosophy represents the innovative
integration of Dr. Cohen's studies on the psychosocial characteristics (stage of
readiness, self-efficacy, motives, perceived barriers/excuses) between exercise
Relapsers and regular exercisers (Maintainers), along with their physiological
parameters (health/exercise history and present fitness status) to enhance/optimize
an individual's health, fitness and
performance levels.
I am interested in turning short-term healthy habit adoption into
long-term healthy habit maintenance. I believe that the largest area
responsible for future gains in health, fitness and performance can be found in
countering the psychosocial barriers, or excuses that limit and interrupt
individual's desired patterns of participation. Reducing sedentary
lifestyle can be achieved in part by preventing or limiting time spent in
inactive relapse. Application of safe, effective and efficient strategies to
counter these excuses is the purpose of EXCUSERCISE.
